Bhubaneswar, Dec 14: A two-day event on national energy conservation organised by the Center for Environmental Studies (CES) concluded Sunday with a function at the Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH) here. It was held on the occasion of World Energy Conservation Day.
Recognising the children’s role in bringing a positive change to power-saving efforts, the CES had organised a state-level energy conservation quiz competition for school students Saturday.
The contest winners were awarded at the RMNH ceremony Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, Sailabala Padhi, CES director, said: “One can easily save energy by turning off fans, lights, heaters and other electric appliances when they are not in use. This is the easiest and efficient way of saving energy.” For example, he said, natural light could be used instead power lamps at work places.
“People must be aware that bright lighting at work places brings health problems such as stress, headache, blood pressure, etc whereas natural lighting enhances the efficiency,” said the director.
Experts felt a lot of energy could be saved by having natural light at homes and in offices. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), LED lights, skylights, smart windows and the like can save substantial amounts of energy.
Minister for energy Pranab Prakash Das called for greater cooperation from all sections of society to save energy. He wanted people to be aware of benefits of energy conservation.
The CES also organised a students’ rally from Kalinga Stadium to the Power House Square in the city Sunday to spread awareness among people about the need for energy conservation. About 300 students took part in the rally.
Among those present at the RMNH function were principal secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra, principal secretary, forest department, Raj Kumar Sharma and RMNH director G Indresh.
