Cuttack: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the state government to compensate the family of an elderly woman, who had died during a police raid on a shop in Jagannath Prasad area of Ganjam district in 2014.
The rights body has directed the state Chief Secretary to pay Rs 1-lakh compensation to victim Laxmi Bisoyi’s family within six weeks.
Police had raided the shop of Narayan Bisoyi on suspicion of narcotics sale. A police personnel allegedly pushed Narayan’s mother Laxmi violently during the raid. Laxmi fell down on the ground and died subsequently.
Advocate Prabir Kumar Das had moved the NHRC and urged it to take necessary steps to provide compensation to the victim’s family.
Taking up the case, the NHRC had served a notice on the state government and asked the latter to submit a report explaining why compensation should not be provided to the victim’s family.
However, the state government did not submit any reply.
