Bhubaneswar: People Monday demanded action against those involved in an attack on police late Sunday night when members of a political party went on a rampage, leaving several people including policemen of Sahid Nagar police station injured.
Sahid Nagar police earned the wrath of miscreants when the former tried to save some persons involved in a scuffle with the hooligans. The accused hurled stones at cops when the latter tried to disperse them. Rajesh Swain, a resident of VSS Nagar, along with his kin including some females were having a conversation outside their home at around 10 pm Sunday.
A car carrying some youths including Prakash Tripathy, allegedly a member of Biju Yuva Vahini, hit the scooter. Subsequently, both the groups got into a heated argument that soon turned violent. Swain called his friends and assaulted Tripathy and his group.
Tripathy in turn called his aides numbering around 50 who were armed with sharp weapons. They attacked Swain and his kin leaving them injured. Later, both lodged complaints against each other at Sahid Nagar police station. Police assured Tripathy’s group that they would arrest Swain and others. Later, the cops registered a case against Swain and his group and brought them to the police station.
However, as soon as the PCR van carrying the trio entered the police station, the hooligans, allegedly belonging to Tripathy’s group, started attacking Swain and others. They also attacked the cops and ransacked the police station when the latter tried to disperse members of the Biju Yuva Vahini.
Around four policemen including IIC Biranchi Pati and ASI Abhaya Kumar Raut sustained grave injuries. Two cases, 111/19 based on the counter complaint lodged by family members of Swain and 112/19 over assault on police were registered against Tripathy and others. Though Sahid Nagar police sent Swain to court Monday, it failed to arrest Tripathy and his associates till this report was filed.
Commissioner of Police Satyajit Mohanty said the miscreants had been identified with the help of CCTV footage. He assured that such unruly behavior will not be tolerated and stringent action will be taken against the guilty.
