Bhubaneswar: Danda Yatra or Danda Nacha Orissa is very popular in the southern regions of the state. Also known as ‘Danda Jatra’, ‘Danda Nacha’ is amongst the most ancient forms of histrionic arts of the state.
Associated with ritualistic services, ‘Danda Nata’ is in fact an institution of dance, music and dramatics blended with religions, social reformations and conveys the message of universal brotherhood. ‘Danda Nata’ is performed in the month of Odia month of Chaitra (mid-March to mid-April).
Though the name is ‘Nrutya’ or dance, it is basically an observation of religious fast for a period of 21 days by devotees for fulfillment of their cherished desires. ‘Danda Nacha’ is a robust show of devotion to Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali. This dance festival is regularly organised by group named ‘Danda’. People also celebrate ‘Danda Brata’, ‘Rudrakali Brata’, ‘Rudrakali’ fasting and ‘Mesu’ along with ‘Danda Nacha Jatra,’ which are very popular among the locals.
The participants are known as the ‘Bhoktas’. All the `Bhoktas` lead a very pious life during the period of the festivity and avoid non-vegetarian food during this period. They also abstain from cohabiting during this period.
