Balasore: A day after a nurse in the district headquarters hospital (DHH) was attacked by people who alleged that she had demanded bribe from a patient and a five-hour cease-work by nurses at the DHH, Collector Ramesh Chandra Rout and sub-collector Nilu Mohapatra Saturday looked into the matter and recommended action against the staff and the nurses.
Rout and Mohapatra have recommended medical superintendent Sudhir Ghose and chief district medical officer Dr Ranjan Padhi to initiate action against the nurse and other staff Saturday.
The district headquarters hospital had witnessed unruly scene when a nurse wanted bribe from a woman after her delivery Friday. Angry people had attacked the nurse and left her wounded.
Taking offense to this, staff nurses in the DHH resorted to ceasework for five hours while patents had to suffer a lot. Patients alleged that medicines, injections and saline could not be available to them in time.
Police and the hospital authorities intervened and settled the matter.
It may be recalled that Pramila Mohanty of Singhapur under Soro police limits, was admitted to the hospital Thursday night. She delivered a baby girl in the wee hours Friday.
Rina Hati, a nurse working in the OT of the delivery ward, demanded Rs 1000 from the woman after her delivery. She told the patient that Rs 1000 will be given to the doctor who conducted the delivery.
However, family members of Pramila handed out Rs 300 to the nurse. It was alleged that instead of receiving the money, the nurse misbehaved and abused the kin of the patient.
This led to heated arguments between the two sides. As the matter became public, some women dragged the nurse out of the OT and attacked her.
Such incidents come to the fore amid repeated complaints about bribe being demanded by some hospital staff from patients.
The Collector said,” An ASHA and relative of the patients were allegedly not allowed to the ward. After holding discussion about the allegation with the CDMO, such action has been taken against the nurse and some other staff.”
The Collector admitted before media that the nurse had demanded bribe while nurses ceased work for five hours. Action was also recommended on this count, he added.
