Kendrapara: A woman gave birth on the verandah of the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) here as no doctor was available to attend to her due to the nation-wide doctors’ strike Monday.
Later, a Class IV woman employee took them inside the labour room and took care of woman and her newborn.
Healthcare services have been severely hit in this hospital as well as in the state as doctors all over the country are on strike after an assault on their counterparts in West Bengal.
The incident sparked tension among the public, and they flayed the district administration and the hospital authorities for not making alternative arrangements at the hospital.
The woman who has not been identified reached the DHH in an ambulance to have a checkup. Her relatives had booked for checkup, but failed to get the service as no doctor was available.
Meanwhile, the woman could not bear labour pain and collapsed on the passage connecting the verandah of the labour room and gave birth. A woman Class IV employee rushed them to the labour room.
Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Urmila Mishra said she will review the matter.
