Berhampur: Come August, the traffic management system here will witness a significant change as the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) is preparing to implement the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) by July-end.
Revealing this Saturday, BeMC Commissioner Chakraborty Singh Rathore said the ITMS is being installed at a cost of Rs 3.9 crore, and that BeMC will have to spend Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh for its smooth management.
The new traffic system will have a 24-hour control room which will function from the BeMc office. Work on this is in the final stage.
The control room will be connected to control rooms at the SP’s office and RTO office. The software for the new traffic system will be developed by July-end.
The new system will identify people violating traffic norms, click their photographs and send it to the control rooms at BeMC, SP and RTO offices for action. The BeMC and RTO offices will prepare a list of the violators and send them notice asking them to pay their penalties.
The trial run of the new traffic system will start from August 1 and a drive will be launched in the city to make people aware about the new system.
The civic body hopes the system will be either implemented from August 15 or from August 31, the Local Self-Governance Day. Penalties will be collected from motorists violating traffic rules as soon as the new system starts working.
According to available reports, integrated cameras will be installed along with automatic traffic signal lights at major intersections like Tata Benz Square, PVN Rao petrol Pump Square, Kamapalli Square, Gate Bazaar and Courtpeta Square. Two cameras will be installed on each road connecting to squares.
Two cameras have been installed at the Courtpeta Square and their trial is in progress. Auto traffic signals have been installed at three squares. Work on installing traffic signal lights and cameras will get completed by July-end.
Around 100 integrated cameras will be installed at all major commercial hubs and junctions in the city. The new system will help to keep tabs on traffic control, curbing criminal activities and sanitation in the city. This will help to identify people dumping waste in the open and to take action against them.
