Parjang: Officials of the district administration Thursday reached out to octogenarian China Nayak at Bhejia Clony No-3 of Akhuapal panchayat under Parjang block in Dhenkanal district, promising to support her.
China, who is living a lonely and life full of poverty after her husband’s demise, had asked for permission to commit euthanasia. The administration had failed to heed to her request till a report on the pitiable condition of China was published in ‘Dharitri’.
China had none to look after her. She had not been included any of the beneficial schemes and yojanas for old persons. Hence she decided to commit euthanasia and recently met the Collector, asking permission to end her life.
Administrative officials Thursday visited her ramshackle hut. Panchayat executive officer Ralia Hansda conducted an enquiry and discovered that China has been deprived of benefits available for old widows. Sarpanch Pradeep Behera immediately provided her with 10kg of rice, as per the relief rules.
Following the direction of BDO Basant Kumar Mallick, the registration of the Aadhar card of China was done at her hut itself. The sarpanch facilitated the move by providing a generator for power supply. The registration of the card would help China get other benefits also.
“She will now get 10kg of rice under the Annapurna Yojana every month. She will also get pension on a regular basis,” stated the BDO.
