Baripada/Rairangpur: A man and his son were Sunday released from Rairangpur jail in Mayurbhanj district where they had been lodged for more than two and a half months for killing the former’s wife, who is alive.
Badampahar police who had declared Raimani Naik dead three months ago produced her in the court alive and after recording her statement, her husband Sanjay Naik and father-in-law Mangal Naik were absolved of the crime and were released.
Badampahar Police Station Officer in Charge (OIC) Sashadhara Sethi has been transferred by the order of Mayurbhanj’s Superintendent of Police.
Since the news reached the village that Raimani is alive and Mangal and his son Sanjay have been released from the jail, Purunapani villagers are a happy lot.
However, they have held the police squarely responsible for making two innocent persons to undergo imprisonment.
This incident is raising questions about how careless the police are and how our judicial system is.
Few months ago, Raimani had left home for Cuttack to do some jobs. As she did not inform her family members, they searched for her at every possible place but could not find her.
Meanwhile, a decomposed charred body of a woman was recovered from Pahadpur jungle under Badampahar police limits April 27. During investigation, Raimani’s relatives identified the body as her. On the basis of their complaint, police arrested her husband Sanjay and father-in-law Mangal. A case was registered (Case No-18/19) after post-mortem
However, Raimani, who was not aware of the whole episode that happened during her absence, returned to her home last week, taking everyone in her village by surprise.
Seeing her alive, the villagers gave an earful to the police for their carelessness and putting two innocent persons behind bars.
On the other hand, the police took Raimani to a secret place and after interrogation she was produced at Rairangpur SDJM court Saturday. After getting her statement recorded, she was let go with her family members.
While Raimani’s episode is solved, the case of the decomposed charred body recovered from Pahadpur jungle April 27 has cropped up, putting the cops in the dock.
