Bargarh: An undertrial prisoner managed to escape from the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Bargarh late in the night, Thursday. He had been undergoing treatment there.
The prisoner has been identified as Nakula Majhi, a resident of Barpali in Bargarh district.
Sources said that Nakula was arrested in connection with the Jamurda firing incident. He threatened the sarpanch of Mahada in Barpali in the month of June and had been lodged at Bargarh sub-jail as an undertrial prisoner.
Thursday he was taken from the sub-jail to a court in order to produce him before the judge. Despite being under police custody, he managed to reach out to a sharp object and injured himself by cutting his body parts.
He was rushed to the DHH where he was undergoing treatment, with policemen keeping a watch on him. At midnight, the policemen peeped into the ward only to find Nakula not being in his bed. After carrying out a search, it was confirmed that he has given the cops a slip.
The police were yet to track him down till the filing of the report.
