Angul: The Angul civic body seems to be ignoring the fact that lanes and by-lanes are fast turning into garbage dumping yards in the town.
Walking through the road from Angul Market Square to Harimahuri Square has become a nightmarish experience for the public. The entire stretch is littered with garbage dumped by municipality employees. People pass through the area holding handkerchiefs to their nose.
The Golei Square Market near the bus stand is no better. Garbage collected from different places are dumped in this area. A slight drizzle is enough to make the situation worse.
Local residents said the campaign launched by the municipality to collect garbage after weighing it is nothing, but an eyewash. The garbage collected from wards is found dumped at the end of each ward.
There were some trolley pushers and tractor drivers among the dismissed 22 contract workers. With their dismissal, the disposal of garbage has become a herculean task for the civic body.
Finding no easy way out to deal with the garbage, the civic body is getting rid of garbage by setting it afire, causing severe air pollution as toxic fumes are emanating from them.
When contacted, executive officer, Angul Municipality, Seemanchal Mishra, said he is going to solve the problem in coming days.
“It is just two days since I took charge temporarily. I have no idea as to what my predecessor had been doing. Steps would soon be taken to make all streets and squares clean,” he said.
