Berhampur: Detection and position of flights within 450-km radius of Silk City got a boost after an ultramodern monopulse secondary surveillance radar (MSSR) was inaugurated at the radar centre in Narendrapur on the city’s outskirts, Thursday.
The radar was inaugurated at the MSSR site of the Airport Authority of India Ltd (AAI) at Narendrapur. The newly-installed radar will enhance the air surveillance of flights entering the 450-km radius of city’s skyline.
“Installed at an expenditure of Rs 1.5 crore, it will collect details of flights entering the skyline and extend them to communication navigation and surveillance (CNS) services at Bhubaneswar and Kolkata,” Banshidhar Arukh, joint general manager of Berhampur radar centre, said.
Amit Kumar Banerjee, executive director of communication navigation and surveillance (CNS) planning section of AAI in New Delhi inaugurated the radar by joining as chief guest. Executive director SP Yadav of east zone, George Therakkar, general manager (engineering), Sudhamaya Maiti, CNS general manager attended the programme as guest of honour.
The AAI has its surveillance radars at Berhampur and Jharsuguda. Earlier, the radar at Berhampur was used only to detect the position of aircraft approaching the Berhampur skyline.
However, with the MSSR radar it will be easier to collect details on the identity of the flight, its altitude, speed, direction, position and movement and even the number of passengers travelling in the flight. Among others assistant general managers SK Patra and Partha Ray were present at the function.
