Bhubaneswar, August 10: Out of 70,900 anganwadi centres (AWCs), 26,118 do not have their own buildings, according to data submitted by the state government to Centre.
Of the functional AWCs, only 44,782 centres are running in governmnt buildings while 18,683 are working in community buildings and 7,331 in rented houses. The ramining are running with some adjustments.
As per data, 61,831 AWCs buildings are pucca houses. However, 9,069 centres are functoining in kuchcha houses and only 104 centres have free space required for children’s playground.
Altogether 1119 centres in Balasore district do not have pucca houses and 907 in Rayagada, 891 in Koraput, 810 in Nabarangpur, 702 in Keonjhar and 618 in Puri have no shelter of their own.
Ironicaly, the sanitation facilities provided in almost all centres are poor. As many as 56,123 AWCs do not have toilets while 4,125 centre do not have drinking water fecilities. In the tribal-hit Malkangiri district only 24 centres out of 1250 have functional toilets.
