Rayagada, August 18: Two members of CPI (Maoists) who were working in Banshadara division under Orissa Maobadi Party leader Sabyasachi Panda Tuesday surrendered before superintendent of police (SP) K Shiva Subramani here.
The two were identified as Loknath alias Rahul Gagaranga (25) and Sunil Gagaranga (26) of Tangadapa village of Piskapanga panchayat under Chandrapur block, SP Subramani told the media. The two used to supply foods and arrange shelter for top leaders of the left wing during their visits to the area. Besides, they were inviting the locals to attend the meetings held by the ultras, the SP added.
The police suspect that the duo was involved in a case that was registered in Chandrapur police station September 3, 2013.
According to reports, the eighth battalion of CRPF, with the help of sniffer dogs, had launched a search operation in Chandrapur area in 2013. During the operation near Belundi and nearby villages, a steel tiffin box containing 15 kg of improvised explosive device (IED) was seized. Besides, some books authored by Sabyasachi Panda, 14 Maoist literatures and some polythene sheets were seized.
The police suspected the involvement of the two in the incident. However, Loknath, one of the two surrendered ultras was involved in the blasting of Dangasorada police outpost in 2008, the SP said.
Subramani further said, the surrendered guerilla used to track the movement of the security forces at a weekly market in Hanumantapur village under Chandrapur police limits and pass on information to the senior Maoist leaders.
Maoist had attacked CRPF jawans in December 2010 leaving a havildar of eighth battalion dead.
Similarly, a constable of Chandrapur police station was also rendered critical in another attack, the SP informed the mediapersons. Additional superintendent of police Laxman Patel was also present at the press meet.
