Berhampur: In a freak mishap, a man died after an iron rod perturbing from an under construction drain pierced through his left chest near Aankuli over-bridge under Baidyanathpur police limits in Ganjam district late Thursday night.
Local residents spotted the body Friday morning and immediately informed the police.
Later, Baidyanathpur IIC Sarada Prasanna Das, Berhampur SDPO Vishnuprasad Pati, a scientific team and some traffic policemen reached the spot, recovered the blood-soaked body after cutting the rod with the help of a cutter and sent it for postmortem.
The police identified the deceased as Purnachandra Samantray (35), son of late Raghunath Samantray of Lanjipalli Tota Sahi.
Local residents held the contractor responsible for the death. They alleged the over-bridge and drain construction work has long been left midway. And the contractor has been least bothered about the perturbing iron rods that eventually claimed one life.
The police have informed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
Sources said that Purnachandra was an air conditioner mechanic. He had gone somewhere on his scooty Thursday. His family members said that they had been waiting for his return all throughout the night. They came to know about his death Friday morning when the police informed them.
Police could identify the body after verifying the scooty’s number. As they reached the spot, they first ascertained the name of the vehicle’s owner from the registration number. Then they informed the deceased’s family. The deceased’s brother Ishan Kumar Samantray identified the body as that of his brother’s.
