Rourkela: A 52-year-old professor of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela has lost his life while fighting the deadly virus in Sundargarh district.
The Health and Family Welfare department informed about the professor’s death, Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Samarjit Sarkar. Sarkar was working as a professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department of NIT, Rourkela.

Sources said, Sarkar was identified as COVID-19 patient a few days ago. After this the health department of Sundargarh district admitted him to Hi-Tech COVID Hospital in Rourkela for treatment.
After his health condition deteriorated, the hospital authority shifted him to the COVID-19 ward of Jaiprakash Hospital in the district for better treatment. However, Sarkar succumbed to the deadly virus, Sunday.
He was also suffering from uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
In the presence of Rourkela district administration his last rites have been performed at Vedvyas cremation ground in Rourkela.
With the death of the professor, the COVID-19 death tally has reached 22 in the district.
