Cuttack: A herd of elephants got trapped on an alluvial plain in River Mahanadi near Mundali here Saturday.
There are 18 to 20 elephants in the herd.
Locals first spotted the jumbos being stuck in the middle of the river. Realising the seriousness of the incident, they immediately informed the forest department.
Meanwhile officials from the forest department have reached the spot and are paying a close watch on the herd. At the same time, they are also working on rescuing the trapped pachyderms.
According to sources, the herd from Athagarh’s Sukasan jungle was heading towards Chandaka forest. They were crossing the river when they got stuck near ‘Daspur ghat’.
As the news spread, people from nearby areas also thronged the river bank to see for themselves how the elephants were being rescued.
