Bhubaneswar: A woman and her son attempted self-immolation in front of the Odisha Legislative Assembly here, Saturday.
It is the third such incident that took place in front of the Assembly after a couple from Nayagarh tried to self-immolate themselves November 24.
The woman has been identified as Sulochana Das, a resident of Kujang area in Jagatsinghpur district. She and her son Subrat Das attempted suicide because justice for her other son who was allegedly murdered a year ago has not been delivered to them.
Avoiding the watchful eyes of security men deployed around the Assembly for the Winter Session, the mother-son duo managed to reach close to IG Park, in front of the Assembly and poured kerosene on themselves.
It was when they were about to light a matchstick to set themselves afire that the security men rescued them just in the nick of time.
Notably, a couple from Nayagarh district November 24 had attempted self-immolation in front of the Assembly demanding justice for their minor daughter Pari who was murdered. The opposition parties BJP and Congress used the case as a peg to hang their attack on the ruling government, disrupting the day’s proceedings, Saturday.
Friday also witnessed a similar incident when three farmers had tried to set themselves afire over Centre’s controversial farm laws.
Frequent happening of such cases has caused headache to the security personnel deployed outside the Assembly.
