Dhenkanal: In another incident of man-elephant conflict, a tusker trampled a farmer to death at Kainsha village under the Sadar Forest Range limits in Dhenkanal district, Wednesday. The deceased farmer has been identified as Ramesh Sahu.
The incident has triggered tension in the locality with the villagers staging a roadblock. They demanded compensation for the bereaved family and a government job to a family member.
According to the village sources, Ramesh was guarding his farm where he had grown green vegetables. While guarding his vegetable field, he suddenly came face to face with a tusker that had strayed into his field to graze on the vegetables.
Seeing the tusker enter his farm, Ramesh tried to divert the pachyderm by throwing stones at it. Turning furious, the tusker caught him up by its trunk, pinned him down on the ground and trampled him, causing his death on the spot.
On being informed, forest department officials and police reached the spot. The roadblock was withdrawn only after the forest department officials promised their demands will be looked into.
