Balishankara: A woman, who had come to Sundargarh district from Chhattisgarh along with eight others on a pilgrimage, was trampled to death by an elephant at Ghogar village in Sundargarh district Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Bilei Bai (45).
According to sources, the deceased and eight other devotees from Bishnupur village under Sitapur police limits in Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh had come to Sundargarh. They wished to visit the Jagannath temple in Sundargarh. After visiting the temple and Maa Samaleswari temple, they were returning to Chhattisgarh.
On their way, they stopped at Balishankara village to spend the night. Unaware about the locality, Bilei went to a nearby jungle to attend nature’s call. An elephant came from nowhere and, before she could react, took her by its trunk and trampled her to death.
On being informed, Forest personnel and police reached the spot. After preliminary investigation, the police sent the body for post-mortem to Sundargarh DHH.
