Papadahandi: A migrant labourer died on the spot while eight others sustained grievous injuries after the SUV they were travelling in met with an accident near Babaji Guda on National Highway-26 under Maidalpur police limits in Nabarangpur district, Saturday.
While the deceased has been identified as Asish Kumar Bharti, the identities of the injured passengers are yet to be ascertained. However, it is learnt that they are all migrant labourers from Jharkhand.
According to a source, the nine men had gone to Hyderabad to work at a construction site. On Saturday, they were returning home in a Scorpio van.
The driver dozed off as they were nearing Babaji Guda and the van veered to a side and ran into an acacia tree, leading to the mishap.
On being informed, a team from Maidalpur police station reached the spot and rescued the injured passengers and recovered the body for post mortem. The injured persons are receiving treatment at Papadahandi community health centre (CHC).
A detailed investigation is underway, it was learnt.
