Rourkela: Tension mounted Monday morning on the premises of the Rourkela government hospital in Sundargarh after family members of a deceased found that stray dog has eaten away some parts of the accident victim’s body kept in mortuary of the health facility.
A source said that the deceased man identified as Rajesh Yadav of Udit Nagar locality in Rourkela had died Thursday after being hit by a four-wheeler at Malgodown area under Udit Nagar police limits. The man’s body was kept in the mortuary for post-mortem.
A part of Rajesh’s face was found eaten away by stray dog. Later, the incident triggered tension at the government-run hospital. On being informed by locals, Raghunathpali police officials immediately reached the spot and tried to pacify many irate people who had gathered.

Post-mortem of the body was to be conducted in the morning. After striving for over an hour the situation was brought under control. The situation calmed down after local tehsildar and senior police officials promised to investigate into the incident and take necessary action against the guilty employee. The officials also promised to provide compensation. Eventually, the family agreed for post-mortem.
On being contacted, superintendent of the hospital Jagdish Barik said, “A team has been formed to probe the incident. I also assure to take action to prevent reoccurrences of such incidents at the hospital.”
“A dog might have strayed into the mortuary. Such an incident had never happened in the hospital earlier. Action will be taken against those responsible on the basis of probe report,” Barik further said.
