Both Goa Deputy Chief Ministers lose polls
Panaji: Both Deputy Chief Ministers of Goa lost Assembly elections to their nearest Congress rivals Thursday though their party BJP is on course to emerge as the single largest political formation in the state. Deputy Chief Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar was defeated by Leader of Opposition and Congress candidate Digambar Kamat by a huge margin of almost 6,000 votes in the Margao Assembly constituency. The second Deputy Chief Minister in the Pramod Sawant-led cabinet, Chandrakant Kavlekar, lost to Congress candidate Altone D’Costa in Quepem.
AAP wins 59 seats, leads in 33
Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party crossed the halfway mark in Punjab, winning 59 seats and leading in 33, according to the poll results declared by the Election Commission so far. As per the data available at 4 pm, the ruling Congress won nine seats and was leading in nine other seats. On the other hand, the SAD-BSP and the BJP-led alliances faced a rout in the polls.
Yogi leading by over 50,000 votes in Gorakhpur
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has strengthened his lead over his nearest rival in the Gorakhpur Urban assembly constituency, while his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya is trailing in Sirathu. Adityanath has so far polled 80,510 votes, while his nearest rival Subhawati Shukla of the Samajwadi Party (SP) has got 28,536 votes, according the Election Commission (EC) website. He was leading by over 51,000 votes.
Humbly accept people’s verdict: Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi Thursday said the party humbly accepts the people’s verdict in the assembly polls and will learn from it. “Humbly accept the people’s verdict. Best wishes to those who have won the mandate. My gratitude to all Congress workers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication. We will learn from this and keep working for the interests of the people of India,” Gandhi said on Twitter.
Punjab polls: CM Channi defeated from Bhadaur
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has lost the electoral battle to AAP’s Labh Singh Ugoke from the Bhadaur seat in Barnala district. According to the results declared Thursday, Ugoke, who contested the Assembly polls for the first time, defeated Channi by a margin of 37,558 votes.
BJP wins 5 seats, Cong 3 & Independents 2 in Goa at 2.30 pm
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won five seats, the Indian National Congress (INC) three and Independent candidates two in the 40-member Goa Assembly, as per the data available at 2.30 pm. The Election Commission trends showed that the ruling BJP was ahead in 15 other seats while the Congress was trending ahead in eight other seats.
Azam Khan, son leading in Rampur, Suar
Lucknow: Senior Samajwadi Party leader Mohd Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam were leading in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur and Suar constituencies respectively Thursday. Azam Khan got 41,608 votes while his BJP rival Akash Saxena got 5,035 votes, according to the EC. In Suar seat, Azam Khan’s son Abdullah Azam was leading by more than 18,000 votes over BJP ally Apna Dal (S) candidate Haider Ali Khan alias Hamza Mian.
Adityanath leading from Gorakhpur seat by over 31,000 votes
Lucknow/Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was heading for a landslide victory and leading by around 31,000 votes from Gorakhpur Urban seat Thursday. According to updated Election Commission figures, Adityanath has secured 47,427 votes while his nearest rival, Samajwadi Party’s Subhawati Shukla, bagged 16,427 votes.
Goa CM Pramod Sawant wins from Sanquelim constituency
Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant won the election from his traditional Sanquelim Assembly constituency Thursday, and expressed condifence that the BJP will form government in the coastal state. After trailing in the initial rounds, Sawant managed to retain the Sanquelim seat by margin of around 1,000 votes.
Akhilesh Yadav leading in Karhal
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav maintained a comfortable lead from Karhal constituency of Uttar Pradesh Thursday, according to latest poll trends. Yadav had secured 48,379 votes so far while his nearest rival Union Minister SP Singh Baghel got 19,243 votes, according to the Election Commission. Karhal seat is considered as a stronghold of the SP. Yadav has so far got 67.15 per cent votes while Baghel got 26.71 per cent votes. Akhilesh, who is MP from Azamgarh, is contesting the assembly election for the first time.
Adityanath leading from Gorakhpur seat
Lucknow/Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was heading for a landslide victory and leading by around 15,000 votes from Gorakhpur Urban seat on Thursday.
According to updated Election Commission figures, Adityanath has secured 21,221 votes while his nearest rival Samajwadi Party’s Subhawati Shukla had got 6,628 votes.
BSP leading in just 3 seats in UP
According to the Election Commission website at 12:50 PM, the BSP was leading on three seats but had a vote share of 12.85 per cent, the third highest in the state after BJP and Samajwadi Party. BSP’s Umashankar Singh was leading over nearest SBSP rival Mahendra by nearly 2,000 votes, the EC showed. The party candidates were also leading in Hapur, Jalalpur in Ambedkarnagar district and Menhdawal in Sant Kabir Nagar district.
Sidhu congratulates AAP
Chandigarh: With the AAP all set to sweep the Punjab polls, Congress chief Navjot Sidhu said Thursday that the party humbly accepts the mandate of the people of the state. He also congratulated the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party. “The voice of the people is the voice of God… Humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab… Congratulations to Aap !!!” Sidhu said in a tweet.

Chandigarh: As the AAP appeared set for a clean sweep in Punjab, the party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Thursday the people of the state ‘for this revolution’. “Many congratulations to the people of Punjab for this revolution,” Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister, said in a tweet in Hindi. In the tweet, he also posted a picture of him standing with the AAP’s chief ministerial candidate and MP Bhagwant Mann, with both leaders flashing victory sign. According to trends available at 12.30pm, the AAP was leading in 90 of the 117 Assembly seats.
BJP all set to retain UP
Lucknow: The ruling BJP seems to be on course to retain power in Uttar Pradesh, with poll trends Thursday showing the party alliance leading in 269 seats as against 121 of its nearest rival Samajwadi Party. Prominent candidates who have secured a lead include Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav from Karhal, Shivpal Yadav from Jaswant Nagar and CLP leader Aradhana Shukla from Rampur Khas (Pratapgarh).
EC lifts ban on victory processions
New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) lifted Thursday the ban on victory processions during the counting of votes and declaration of results. In a statement, the poll panel said keeping in mind the current status of Covid-19 in these states, the EC has ‘decided to relax the guidelines on victory processions during and after the counting and has withdrawn the blanket ban on victory procession’. The relaxation will be subject to existing instructions of state disaster management authorities and preventive measures imposed by concerned district authorities, the EC added.
Turncoats trail in Punjab
Chandigarh: Several party hoppers including Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Fateh Jang Singh Bajwa and Anil Joshi were trailing from their respective constituencies in Punjab, according to poll trends. Ahead of the Assembly polls, several leaders had switched sides. Former Sports Minister Sodhi had quit the Congress and joined the BJP and contested from Ferozepur City seat. He is a four-time MLA from Guruharsahai in Ferozepur. Former Congress leader Bajwa, who had joined the BJP, and fought from Batala seat was trailing.
BJP leading in 18 seats in Goa at 11 am
New Delhi: The ruling BJP was leading on 18 seats, while the Congress on 11 seats in the 40-member assembly in Goa, as per the Election Commission of India data at 11 a.m.
The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party that has joined hands with the Trinamool Congress is leading on 4 seats and so are the Independents.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Goa Forward Party and Revolutionary Goans Party are all leading at one seat each, as per the trends available at 11 a.m.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is trailing with 1,648 votes on his Sanqulim constituency with Congress’ Dharmesh Saglani leading with 2,094 seats at 11 a.m.
Utpal Manohar Parrikar, son of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who contested as an Independent, from his Panjim seat, was trailing with 784 votes. BJP’s Atanasio Monserrate was leading with 1,167 votes.
As per the ABP C-Voter Exit Poll, the 40-member Goa house is likely to witness a hung assembly with ruling BJP and Congress projected to be neck-and-neck. Smaller parties such as the Trinamool-MGP combine, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Independents may emerge as the kingmaker, the Exit poll had predicted.
Healthy lead for Akhilesh
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav is leading from the Karhal constituency of Uttar Pradesh, according to latest poll trends. He has so far got 29,708 votes while his nearest rival, Union Minister SP Singh Baghel of the BJP has managed to get 10,763 votes, as per information available from the Election Commission (EC).
Akhilesh Yadav still optimistic
Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party said Thursday that the initial trends in Uttar Pradesh were ‘not authentic’. It asked its workers to stay put at local Assembly election offices till the counting of votes ends. The SP claimed the initial trends, which showed the BJP leading in majority of the 403 seats in the state, were only to ‘create a perception’ that the saffron party was winning. “These trends are not authentic, a perception is being made that BJP is winning, so that the morale of the workers can be broken and results manipulated dishonestly after 3.00pm. It is an appeal to the workers to stay put at the spot till the last results!” the Samajwadi Party’s media cell tweeted in Hindi.
BJP dominates show in 4 states
New Delhi: The BJP strode ahead of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the key state of Uttar Pradesh. The BJP was also leading in Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, the other three states for which elections were held last month, trends indicated. In trends available for 368 of the 403 seats, the ruling party was ahead in 248 seats, comfortably over the halfway mark, while the SP, whose leader Akhilesh Yadav attracted huge crowds at his campaign rallies, was trailing behind with leads in 97 seats. Adding to the saffron party’s tally, ally Apna Dal (Soneylal) was ahead in nine seats. The Congress was leading in four seats and the BSP in three.
Hat-trick for BJP in Goa
Panaji: The ruling BJP in Goa looks all set to score a hat-trick in the coastal state with the support of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). As per the latest trends for all the 40 Assembly seats in Goa, BJP was leading in 19 seats, while Congress was ahead in 10 seats. MGP was ahead in four seats, AAP in two and Goa Forward Party and Revolutionary Goans Party ahead in one seat each. Independents were ahead in three seats. In case of a hung Assembly, MGP will decide who will form the next government in Goa. Indications are that it will side with BJP in return for Deputy CM’s post and key portfolios. The Congress won 17 seats in 2017 elections.

Chaddha said AAP will soon replace the Congress as the country’s biggest opposition. “I see AAP becoming a national force. AAP is going to be the national and natural replacement of the Congress,” Chaddha was quoted as saying by ‘NDTV’.
