Kendrapara: Agitated villagers and guardians Saturday detained as many as 16 teachers and non-teaching staff, including the headmaster of a high school protesting against non-filling of vacant teacher posts in Karilopatna village under Marshaghai block in this district.
The teachers and non-teachers were locked inside the headmaster’s office for about 3 hours by the villagers to protest the callous attitude of the Block Education Officer (BEO) of Marshaghai block in filling up the vacant teacher posts at Karilopatna-based Jairam Government High School.
The local villagers alleged that the shortage of teachers has badly affected the study of students in the high school established in 1946.
The guardians have in the past several times brought the matter before the notice of the BEO of Marshaghai, DEO of Kendrapara and also the District Collector but in vain.
As many as 13 teacher posts, besides a clerk post, have been lying vacant in the school despite persistent demands by the locals.
The BEO of Marshaghai earlier assured to fill up the vacant posts but failed to keep his promise.
After more than three hours, the Kudanagari police team reached the spot and managed to rescue the teachers and others. The BEO of Marshaghai assured the agitators to take steps to look into the demands of filling up vacant teacher posts within a week.
