Nilagiri: A newborn girl was found and rescued from a secluded place at Swarnachud foothill in Ward No. 6 of Nilagiri Notified Area Council (NAC) in Balasore district Sunday morning. According to reports, the abandoned infant, wrapped in a polythene bag, was found near a mosque at around 4:50 am Sunday.
Locals, after hearing the girl child’s cries, reached the spot and rescued her. Chandrabindu Das, special assistant of the local MP, went to the spot and informed the Nilagiri police station about the incident. The infant girl was rushed to Nilagiri sub-divisional hospital but as her condition deteriorated she was transferred to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). The infant weighing 2 kg and 640 gm is said to be in good health after receiving treatment.
Locals have identified the parents of the newborn child as Ramesh Naik and Damayanthi of Kalakad village under Nilagiri block. When villagers confronted Ramesh, he apologised saying that he had committed a grave mistake by abandoning the newborn. No complaint was registered at Nilagiri police station till the reports came in but the accused couple is absconding after locking their rented house, said the police.
