Bhubaneswar: A passenger bus on its way from Kolkata to Odisha’s Paradip caught fire Friday night near Kharagpur in West Bengal. While the number of passengers travelling aboard the ill-fated vehicle could not be ascertained, a local source suggested that as many as 36 people sustained injuries in the incident.
The injured have been admitted to Midnapur Medical College and Hospital and Kharagpur Gramin Hospital.
The bus reportedly departed Babughat bus depot in West Bengal at 7:30pm. It abruptly caught fire on NH-41 near Madhpur under Kharagpur police limits while on its way to Paradip.
Locals rushed to the rescue of passengers and helped them get to hospitals. The driver and helper of the bus, however, fled the scene immediately after the fire broke out.
