Angul: Two women were killed Thursday after the car in which they were travelling to Bhubaneswar overturned after being hit from the rear by a speeding car. The mishap took place on the Cuttack-Sambalpur old highway near Khandahata ice factory under Sadar police limits in Angul district. The deceased were identified as Sanjukta Pradhan, 58, a senior clerk at the district panchayat office in Angul, and her mother Durgabati Pradhan, 70.
Police and Fire services personnel rushed them to the hospital where doctors pronounced them brought dead. The mother-daughter duo was travelling in the car to attend the post-death rituals of a relative in Bhubaneswar.
A co-passenger Swarnamayee Pradhan, who is also the sister-in-law of the deceased Sanjukta and a stenographer posted at the ADM office, sustained critical injuries along with the car driver. Swarnamayee and the car driver have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital and undergoing treatment. The condition of Swarnamayee is stated to be critical. The driver of the accident-causing car and two occupants fled the scene leaving behind the vehicle after the accident. Sadar police seized the two cars and launched an investigation, IIC Dhiren Behera said.
