Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police here Thursday claimed to have foiled a robbery attempt and arrested four members of a gang near Baramunda Durga Puja Ground here. A car, one sword, two iron rods, one toy gun, one knife and a sharp weapon have been seized from their possession. Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh said the arrested were identified as Sibabrata Swain, 23, Rajesh Behera, 26, Aman Champaty, 22, and Karan Mandal, 25.
Meanwhile, another gang member gave a slip, said the DCP adding that all the accused are history sheeters, with nearly two dozens criminal cases registered against them by the City police.
Khandagiri IIC received a tipoff that a few unidentified men had gathered near National Highway-16 and were planning to rob the motorists and pedestrians said the DCP. The cops swung into action and took them into custody. None of the accused was able to give a proper answer as to why they had gathered there at such late hours, said Singh.
Later, during interrogation, the hoodlums confessed before the cops about their motive, said a senior police official. Khandagiri police have booked the accused under Sections 399 and 402 of IPC, along with Section 25 of Arms Act, and produced them in a local court Thursday.
