‘Abandoned’ newborn girl rescued

Bhawanipatna: A newborn girl, who was apparently abandoned by her parents, has been rescued from Maningapadar village in Bhawanipatna Monday.

She was found by Pratibha Shikha, a resident of the same village who was out in the dawn to attend nature’s call. She reached out to the girl when she heard her crying and immediately rescued her.

When the villagers were informed about the matter, they took it to the police authorities following which; the newborn was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). Upon asking, the doctor informed, “The child was premature and hence underweight. But her overall health is fine.”

The police have initiated a further probe into the matter. The repeated incidents of newborn babies being abandoned has become a matter of concern.

Worth mentioning, a newborn baby boy, abandoned by its mother along the roadside near Electric Office field at Palace Line area in Bolangir district was rescued after passersby spotted the baby crying under the intense heat Sunday noon.

While no exact reason of how the baby reached the place was known, it is suspected that the baby’s mother left it there. On the other hand, the reason of the inhumane activity of the baby’s mother was yet to be ascertained.

Locals suspected the woman might be unwed and might have left the baby fearing social outcry. Locals spotted the baby with ants feeding on it and handed over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

On intimation, Jajpur police and District Child Protection Unit reached the spot and rushed the baby to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for treatment.
