Abhisek, Payal win medals

Bhubaneswar, Sept 19: Orissa karatekas continued their splendid show in the Commonwealth Karate Championships by winning two more medals for the country on the second day at the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Saturday.

Abhisek Patnaik bagged the gold in the U-21 individual boys’ kata event. Payal Baral secured the silver medal in the girls’ junior (U-58kg) fighting event.

However Valena Valentina missed a podium finish after losing to her Australian counterpart in a tough fight. Anupama Swain and Nihar Ranjan Swain will fight in their respective categories Sunday.

Second victory

 Neel Kamal Football Association achieved their second victory in the tournament after scraping past Ekamra Sports Association 2-1 in a Group D match of the 12th Gati Krushna Memorial football league at the Unit-I Boys’ HS Ground here Saturday.

RK Jena opened the account for Neel Kamal in the 20th minute. After the change of ends, however,  Amulya Kumra Jena of Ekamra restored parity. But Priya Pratik Nanda scored the winning goal for Neel Kamal in the 56th minute to ensure victory for his side.

 Hockey workshop

Poonam Youth Welfare Association organised a workshop for hockey umpires at the Satyabrata Stadium in Cuttack, Saturday. Technical staff of Hockey India, Biswa Ranjan Sarangi shared his knowledge and updated the umpires regarding the latest developments. Former national level player Gyanesh Kanungo also shared his expertise on the occasion.
