Activist approaches NHRC for justice to minor rape victim

Kendrapara: Alleging police inaction in providing justice to a minor rape victim, social activist Pratap Mohanty recently knocked the doors of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Mohanty said Ramesh Swain, 26, of Bagada village who was infatuated by a 17-year-old girl allegedly raped her several times on the promise of marriage. Later, when the girl was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, Swain allegedly spurned her marriage proposal.

Consequently, the victim lodged an FIR at Sadar police station, but the cops did not take up her case seriously as the accused happened to be a relative of one of the police officials of the station, alleged Mohanty.

Meanwhile, Mohanty urged the NHRC to direct Chief Secretary to pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the victim’s family and order the Kendrapara SP to submit Action Taken
Report within four weeks.

The NHRC has registered the case.

When contacted, Sadar police station IIC Maheswar Sethy said a case (250/19 under Section 376 of IPC) has been filed. Police have started an investigation, but the accused is yet to be arrested, Sethy added.
