Actor Urmila Matondkar may represent Congress from Mumbai North

Mumbai: Actor Urmila Matondkar is all set to join the Congress and is likely to contest from Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency in the upcoming election. However, there was no confirmation either from the actress who hit the headlines for her role in Rangeela with Aamir Khan or from the congress.

When contacted here Tuesday, Maharashtra Congress spokespersons, as well as Matondkar’s family members, refused to make any statement in this regard. If Urmila is nominated she will face BJP’s sitting MP Gopal Shetty.

It should be mentioned here that in 2014, Shetty defeated Sanjay Nirupam, who is now the president of Mumbai Congress. This time, however, Nirupam is contesting from the Mumbai North-West constituency.

Urmila’s first role as a child artist was in 1977 in the film Karm. Following minor roles in Shreeram Lagoo’s Marathi film Zaakol (1980) and Kalyug (1980), she achieved success at the age of nine in the Sekhar Kapoor-directed ‘Masoom’ which hit the screens in 1983.

She has also worked in films like ‘Bade Ghar Ki Beti’, ‘Narasimha’, ‘Chamatkar’, ‘Dacait’, ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’, ‘Rangeela’, ‘Indian’, ‘Judaai’, ‘Daud’, ‘Satya’, ‘Kaun’, ‘Mast’, ‘Dillagi’, ‘Khoobsurat’, ‘Ek Hasina Thi’, ‘Jungle’, ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’, ‘Om Jai Jagadeesh’, ‘Bhoot’, ‘Pinjar’, ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara’ and ‘Speed’.
