Keonjhar: The Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) in Keonjhar district, supported by the Odisha Mineral Bearing Area Development Corporation (OMBADC), exemplifies a successful model of sustainable agricultural and water resource management.
The initiative addresses critical challenges of water scarcity and soil conservation in the mineral-rich and predominantly tribal district of Keonjhar. Under the programme, OMBADC has facilitated the construction of 17 farm ponds and 238 water harvesting structures by FY 2023-24, benefitting over 2,300 farmers. Additionally, 24 check dams have been constructed across the district, providing irrigation facilities to farmlands and supporting the livelihoods of over 300 farmers. These interventions have enabled year-round water availability for agricultural activities, promoting groundwater recharge and mitigating soil erosion.
Beneficiaries such as Harihara Nayak from Telkoi Block and Ketaki Mohanta from Patna Block have shared how these projects have transformed their lives. “Previously, we were dependent on rainfall for agriculture and faced a lot of difficulty. Since our village is located in a hilly area, rainwater would swiftly flow away leaving us high and dry. With support of OMBADC, I have constructed a water harvesting structure. With this reliable water source, I have been cultivating diverse crops like watermelon, pumpkin, mustard while also venturing into fish farming,” said Nayak. Mohanta said, “With OMBADC’s support, I have built a farm pond in my fields. Using this water source, I am cultivating paddy and various vegetables. My family members actively assist me in agricultural activity. The income generated from farming helps me manage my household expenses and fund the education of my children.”
