Nuapada, August 3: Despite several laws being in place to prevent the exploitation of labourers migrating to other states in search of gainful employment, sufferings of migrant workers from this district are far from over.
In yet another case of exploitation, a labour agent has allegedly taken away all the wages of labourers, who were taken from Aalanbhuta and Keunburla under Boden police limits to Andhra Pradesh to work in a brick kiln. The matter came to the fore after the labourers met district collector Siddique Alam here Monday and sought his intervention to get back their dues.
According to the complaint, the labour agent, a resident of Belapada in Bolangir district, had taken a few people from the two villages to Andhra Pradesh on the promise of employing them in a brick kiln last year.
The labourers were engaged in a brick kiln at Agapoli, but they had work there without payment for six months. When the labourers demanded their wages from their employer, the latter told them that the agent had taken all the payments.
On being denied wages, the labourers returned to their villages recently and went to the agent’s house requesting him to give their dues. However, the agent abused the labourers and refused to clear their dues.
