Tumudibandh, Dec 2: Villagers Tuesday found an ailing wild elephant in a jungle near Kadapan village along the bank of river Uttei in Kandhamal district Tuesday around 6 am. Villagers spotted the animal around 6 am on the river bank in Kotagarh sanctuary and informed forest department officials.
A team of officials reached the spot in Kotagarh sanctuary and administered preliminary treatment to the animal. Later divisional forest officer V Kartik called the Tumudibandh veterinary officer to treat the animal. However, there was no improvement in the condition of the jumbo.
Kartik, who also inspected the surroundings, said help of the veterinary officer of Nandankanan Zoo would be sought.
Forest officials who inspected the spot along with Belaghar police said that four groups of a total of 25 elephants have been roaming around the jungle. There are seven elephants 100 metres from the spot where the ailing animal was lying, they said.
