Akash annexes maiden state ranking title

Cuttack: Akash Mohapatra emerged champion of the All Odisha Senior Snooker State Ranking Championship defeating Subrat Das 6-4 in a thrilling finale here, Friday. This was also Akash’s maiden state ranking title.

Amrit, Debashish shine

Amrit Khatua (68, 167b, 11×4) and Debasish Samantray (54, 130b, 5×4, 2×6) scored half centuries as Odisha stretched their second innings lead to 264 runs against Goa at the end of the third day of their Col CK Nayudu U-23 cricket tournament at Sanguem Cricket Gound in Goa, Friday. Odisha are 208/4 in their second innings with Raghunath Malla (15 batting) and Kshyamasagar Bal (zero batting) currently at the crease when the stumps were drawn.

Earlier, the visitors were all out for 293 in their first innings before dismissing the hosts for 237 in reply to take a crucial 56-run first lead. For the hosts, S Nihal (1/26), Y Dheeraj (1/34), Shubham Dessai (1/38) and Vaibhav Govekar (1/7) took wickets.

Janmejaya selected

Ace bodybuilder of Odisha Janmejaya Mohanty has been selected in the Indian team for the Mr Universe World Bodybuilding Championship in Hamburg, Germany, November 24-26. “I am fully prepared for the mega event and hopeful of a good show,” Janmejaya stated in a press conference Friday.

Odisha bag 2 medals

Odisha athletes won two medals including a gold and a silver in the IIIrd All India Police Judo Clusters Championship, which concluded here Friday. Sitakanta Ojha clinched a gold medal in the men’s parallel bar event while Umakant Ojha secured the second position in the floor event.

Mixed day

India 1 thrashed Nepal 13-3 in a men’s double Group 1 encounter to notch up their first win of the inaugural Asian Boules Sport Confederation Petanque Championship which started at the KIIT Campus, Friday. Earlier in the day, the Indian 1 team lost their campaign opener to Thailand 1-13.

However, it was bad day for the India 2 women’s doubles team as they lost all their three matches in Group 1. They lost against Cambodia (8-13), Malaysia (3-13) and Iran (9-13).

Athletics meet

The 66th Odisha State Athletic Meet will be held at Barabati Stadium here from December 28-30, Odisha Athletic Association (OAA) announced in a press release Friday. The event will be held in U -14, U-16, U-18, U-20 (boy’s and girl’s), men’s and women’s categories.

In another development, OAA also announced that the Cuttack District Annual Athletics Meet will also be held at the same venue December 22-23.
