Ambulance driver held for friend’s murder

Berhampur: Town police Monday claimed to have cracked the murder mystery of Pradip Behera of Kharvel Nagar Third Lane here. His body was found under mysterious circumstances.

The police have arrested a youth in this connection and forwarded him to court. He has been identified as Sansar Mahakud, 21, an ambulance driver of Nimakhandipentha village under Digapahandi police limits.

The police also seized blood-stained clothes and two cement bricks used by Mahakud to bludgeon Nayak to death, additional superintendent of police Shantunu Das told media persons at the SDPO’s office.

Earlier, two minors were detained in this connection. But, they were released after interrogation, Das said.

According to the case diary, the incident occurred October 30. Nayak, Mahakud and the two minors had gone to the spot of the crime for a drinking session. Nayak and Mahakud picked up an altercation over a trifle during the session.

In a fit of rage, Mahakud is believed to have hit Nayak with a brick on his head, leading to his death on the spot. Fearing arrest, Mahakud and the two minors left the body and fled the scene.

Family members spotted the body October 31 and alerted the police. Acting on a complaint by Nayak’s father Hadubandhu, police registered a case and launched a probe.

Later, police detained the two minors who disclosed the matter after which police made the arrest, Das told reporters. Meanwhile, Mahakud confessed to the crime in a drunken state without any intention to kill.

The deceased, on the other hand, was involved in many criminal activities and had three cases pending against him, police said. Among those present at the press meet were SDPO Ashok Kumar Mohanty and Sadar IIC Siba Shankar Mahapatra.
