Jeypore: An ambulance (108) carrying a pregnant woman from the district headquarters hospital here to the SLN Medical College and Hospital at Koraput stopped midway after it developed technical snag leaving the woman to suffer her fate Monday.
Panicked relatives frantically called another ambulance but no vehicle turned up on time to ferry them to Koraput medical college hospital.
The woman was identified as Rotni Harijan, wife of Ratan Harijan of Jobapatraput village under Kundura block in Koraput district.
According to relatives, Rotni was admitted to the district headquarters hospital at Jeypore after she experienced labour pain. The doctors then began formal treatment and two hours later decided to shift her to the SLN Medical College and Hospital at Koraput after her health condition deteriorated.
The ambulance which was transporting Rotni to Koraput developed some technical glitch after travelling 10 kilometres from Jeypore.
Family members tried to stop every vehicle passing by that way and pleaded for help but none cared to listen to their pleas.
The woman finally got a lease of life after a medicine representative, Susant Padhi, passing by that way in his car agreed to play Good Samaritan. He ferried the woman and two of her attendants in his car to the medical college hospital.
The woman delivered a baby girl at Koraput medical college hospital. This has come at a time when a pregnant woman died after an ambulance ferrying her to the hospital ran out of fuel in Mayurbhanj district last week.
