Mumbai: The BJP may field actor Sunny Deol from the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. The news is doing the rounds after party chief Amit Shah met the actor Friday in Pune. However, there has been no official confirmation from either of the side. Sunny has been quoted as saying that it was a courtesy call.
‘I just met him, I have heard about it (joining politics). It was a courtesy call and we took a photograph,” Sunny has been quoted as saying by a section of the media. The actor is well known for his films like ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’, ‘Ghatak’, ‘Border’, Damini and ‘Ghayal’. He won the Filmfare ‘Best Actor’ award for Ghayal and ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for Damini.
It should however, be stated here that the BJP is into an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab and is contesting three of the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Punjab. The party is yet to announce the names of the candidates for each of the three seats. Hence Shah’s meeting with the actor assumes significance.
In case Sunny refuses, the BJP may also field veteran actor Poonam Dhillon . She was appointed as the vice-president of the Mumbai unit of the BJP last year.
The Gurdaspur seat is likely to go to actor and former lawmaker’s Vinod Khanna’s wife Kavita or his son, actor Akshaye.
Sunny’s father the legendary Dharmendra all this time had been busy campaigning for his wife Hema Malini. Now he may have to do the same job for his son, if the latter agrees to contest on a BJP ticket.
