Ancient coin of 32 kg given to State Museum

Bhadrak: The district administration handed over an ancient coin weighing 32 kg to the State Museum Wednesday.

The coin was found during digging of foundation for a boundary wall of Ramnarayan High School at Dolasahi in 1993. The coin is believed to date back to first century AD. The then Collector Surendra Chandra Mohapatra had kept the coin at the district treasury.

A few days ago, the High Court issued an order that ancient coins kept across the state should be handed over to the State Museum.

Following the HC directive, Principal Secretary of Culture Manoranjan Panigrahi had issued a letter to the Collector.

State Museum Superintendent Jayanti Rath and Director of Culture Bijay Kumar Nayak received the ancient coin at the collectorate. Nayak said the coin dates back to first century AD.
