Anganwadi workers stage protest in front of PS

Kendrapara: Protesting against the police inaction in arresting the women involved in stripping and assaulting an Anganwadi worker of Daanigiri Anganwadi centre January 23, workers belonging to the All Odisha Anganwadi Ladies Workers’ Association, Rajkanika, staged a protest and gheraoed the Rajkanika police station Monday.

The protesters asked the IIC to arrest all the suspects as soon as possible and warned that they would intensify their stir in coming days.

Meanwhile, the assaulted Anganwadi staffer threatened self immolation if the police failed to arrest the women involved in stripping and assaulting her publicly near the Anganwadi.

Sources said the women staffer of Daanigiri Anganwadi was stripped and assaulted by a group of village women while she was going for work.

The Anganwadi worker was allegedly assaulted by the women after they waylaid her on the road and asked her about the money that was allotted under the ICDS programme for providing food to children and pregnant women in the last two years. Food supply was stopped at the Anganwadi after a dispute.

The assault on the Anganwadi worker went viral on social media January 24. The victim lodged an FIR at the Rajkanika police station.

The police registered a case under Sections 341, 323, 294, 354(b), 379, 506 and 34 of IPC and launched an investigation.

Police also arrested three suspects in the case and produced them in a court, said IIC Bijay Mallick of Rajkanika police station. A hunt is on to arrest the other suspects involved in the case, Mallick said.
