Angry villagers thrash police IIC, 23 detained

Bhadrak: In a bizarre incident, an Inspector-in-charge of Basudevpur police station in Bhadrak district had to face the wrath of locals of Lunga village over agitation following a road accident Tuesday night.

The IIC sustained critical injuries on his head after the angry locals thrashed him black and blue and pelted stones at the police over the accident case.

He was then rescued and admitted to a local hospital. He was identified as Nabkishore Nayak, IIC of Basudevpur police station. Meanwhile, the police detained 23 villagers in this connection.

According to sources, a DJ vehicle engaged in a procession of a deity hit a minor girl, critically injuring her at Lunga village Tuesday evening.

Based on a complaint by the girl’s father of the girl, police registered a case and a team led by IIC Nayak reached the village to bring the situation under control.

While the cops were holding discussion with the villagers over the issue, an altercation broke out between the cops and the villagers.

The situation turned violent in no time as a group of villagers started attacking the police personnel with stones. They also ransacked the police vehicle.

When the situation went out of control, more police forces were sent to the spot to pacify the agitators and rescue the officials.

The detainees are being interrogated and the DJ vehicle that was involved in the accident has been seized for further inquiry, police sources informed.
