Another minor girl delivers baby in Kandhamal, newborn dies

Phulbani: Days after a Class-VIII girl student, of a government-run residential school, gave birth to a baby in Daringbadi, a similar incident in the same district has come to fore.

According to reports, a girl of Tumudibandha area under same police limits in Kandhamal district was allegedly impregnated by her boyfriend. After she realised that she had conceived, she asked her boyfriend to marry her. However, he rejected her proposal and allegedly threatened her with dire consequences.

The boy reportedly gave the girl some pills Tuesday to facilitate abortion. After consuming those, her conditions deteriorated and she was rushed to a local community health centre, where she delivered a baby boy. The girl and the newborn were later shifted to Phulbani District Headquarters Hospital, where the baby died.

Police have started investigation after registering two different cases– one of unnatural death in connection with the death of the newborn and another on the basis of statement of the minor girl.

The incident comes amid hue and cry over the incidents of minor girls delivering babies in different parts of Odisha. Two days back, a Class-X student delivered a baby at Patkura community health centre in Kendrapara district, January 21. A preliminary probe revealed that the girl had a relationship with a boy of the locality. Police have started an investigation into the incident.

Similarly, after the Kandhamal shocker January 13, three more incidents of rape and subsequent pregnancy was reported from Jajpur, Kalahandi and Dhenkanal districts, January 18.

In Jajpur district, a 14-year-old, raped and impregnated by Pintu Jena, a contractor with Railways, delivered a baby January 18. Similarly, the headmaster of a residential school in Sadar block of Dhenkanal district, lodged a complaint at Sadar police station alleging that a Class-VIII girl of the school was found pregnant.

In Kalahandi district, a Class-VIII girl of a residential school in Narla area took abortion pills after being pregnant for eight weeks. After her condition worsened, she was admitted to the district headquarters hospital from where she was later shifted to VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR).
