Bhubaneswar, June 13: Ansuman Samal of Cuttack and WFM Rutumbara Bidhar of Khurda emerged sole leaders with four points each in the open and girls’ categories after the end of the fourth round of the Orissa State U-15 Chess Championships at DS Law College in Kendrapara, Saturday.
In the open category, two players are sharing the second spot with 3.5 points each. They are Asirwad Swain and Subhasis Barik. Third seed Ansuman prevailed over fifth seed Pranab Kumar Patra. However top seed Asirwad was held by fourth seed Subhasis Barik to a tame draw.
In the girls’ segment, Shreejita Khuntia is in second place with 3.5 points. She defeated Priyanka Sahoo while Rutumbara got the better of third-seeded Sovna Sonali Jena.
Mixed day
Orissa players had a mixed day in office in the fourth round of the 29th National U-9 Chess Championships at Ahmedabad, Saturday.
In the boys’ segment Manish Kumar, Prasmit Prayansu and Aditya Anurakta Mohanty won their respective matches. All of them are in joint third position with three points each.
In the girls’ segment, Bijaylaxmi Barik scripted a hard-fought win. However, Miracle Panda and P Sairupa lost their respective matches. Bijaylaxmi overcame Krishna Maheswari while Miracle went down to WCM Sanskruti Wankhade. In another match Sairupa was humbled by Aleesha Talukdar.
