Berhampur: A ragging incident in the boys’ hostel of Berhampur University (Bhanja Bihar) Wednesday has rocked the campus and disrupted academic life.
Two post-graduate students of the university are said to have started ragging new comers staying in the hostel late at night. The victims have reported the incident in writing to the hostel warden and PG Council chairman Thursday.
According to sources, the two alleged senior students of Rushikulya Hostel went to Nagabali Hostel at about 11.30 pm for ragging. They guarded the main entrance of the hostel and did not allow anyone to escape.
However, as students of other hostels arrived there to rescue the new comers, the two accused started throwing broken bottles at them and threatened them with dire consequences.
The two accused are used to creating such nuisance regularly inside the campus, new inmates alleged. Despite repeated complaints, the university authorities have shown casual approach, the students further alleged. Junior hostellers have demanded stringent action against the accused and their own safety in the hostels, reports said.
On the other hand, a sitting of the new inmates and PG Council chairperson Prof Arundhati Rath was held to discuss issues pertaining to the incident and future eventualities.
A peace committee constituted by the university authorities, comprising hostel warden Prof Bhagirathi Panigrahi, all hostel superintendents and student leaders has discussed ways to ensure safety of inmates and curbing indiscipline.
The university authorities have requested Superintendent of Police Berhampur to deploy police and visit the hostels at night.
