‘Apply scientific research for addressing societal issues’

Bhubaneswar: “Use and application of advanced scientific research for addressing societal issues. Advances in the field of biotechnology have tremendous application in almost every field that affects the human welfare in agriculture, nutrition, health care and environmental protection,” said Former Union Secretary of Biotechnology, Manju Sharma. Sharma was speaking at the 30th Foundation Day function of Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) here Monday.

Ajay Parida, Director, ILS, gave an account of the research activities of the institute and mentioned that in the last one year, the institute has published 70 research papers and obtained three patents. “Our 35 students obtained PhD degrees and received six national awards,” he added. Parida also mentioned that during the year more than 3,000 students from several schools and colleges have visited ILS for exposure to advanced laboratories and interacted with the faculty.

On the occasion a special postal cover of ILS was released by the Chief Post Master General of Odisha circle Santosh Kamila. Manju Sharma inaugurated the Green House facility of the institute. On the occasion, the Bhubaneswar chapter of the National Academy of Sciences, India was also inaugurated.
