Arrest of tribal leader sparks tension at Bhanjanagar

Bhanjanagar: Tension erupted near Tarsingh police station of Bhanjanagar area in Ganjam district when a clash broke out between policemen and local tribals who had gone to the police station to gherao it in a bid to press their various demands.

During the fracas, police arrested local tribal leader Kanhu Mallick. This sparked fresh controversy in the region with tribals alleging that police are often registering false cases and arresting them.

CPI (ML) Ganjam district secretary Shankar Sahoo threatened that if police doesn’t refrain from doing so then they will shift their agitation to national highway and resort to mass protests.

According to reports, Ganesh Mallick of Salapateila and Jitendra Pradhan of Bhogarai under this police limits were murdered few months ago. However, police have failed to nab any of the accused persons in this connection. The tribals held a rally Friday protesting against police inaction and gheraoed the police station.

When tribals surrounded the police station a scuffle erupted between them and the police personnel. Reportedly, the rally was led by tribal leaders Trinath Mallick, Tuna Mallick, Santosh Mallick and Kanhu who was later arrested.
