SHOCKER FROM BALASORE

As villagers block cremation, last rites performed far away

Jaleswar: In a shocking incident, villagers did not allow to cremate a body at Ambuliatha in Jaleswar block of Balasore district Tuesday due to a personal dispute the deceased’s son had with some villagers.

Reports said Bhupati Jena, 71, died Monday. As per tradition, the kin of the deceased sought the help of the village headman and villagers to cremate the body. But the family was prohibited from the cremation ground.

Bupati’s younger son Girija had a dispute with some villagers. A case had been registered by the police regarding this.

Due to this it was decided that no villager would go to Bhupati’s house. The body was left till evening as none turned up for the cremation.

The wife of the deceased tendered an apology and implored the villagers for help to cremate the body, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.

Finally, the kin of the deceased sought the help of the police. Although the police had assured the family of all help for the cremation, they also did not turn up.

Eventually, four sons of the deceased carried the body to the banks of river Subarnarekha, 14 km away from the village. There they performed the last rites.
