Malkangiri: The life of a pregnant woman in the cut-off region of this district could be saved Saturday due to the promptness shown by an ASHA.
According to reports, the family of a pregnant woman in Sariaguda village under Chitrakonda police limits contacted ASHA Sumitra Sethi after the patient experienced labour pain. Sariaguda is part of the cut-off region of Chitrakonda block and it was a daunting task to reach the village let alone carrying the patient to a government hospital.
However, Sumitra didn’t waste time and set out to offer her service. She first had to walk about three km to reach the ferry ghat from where she hired a fishing boat and arrived at Sariaguda. However, the pregnant woman couldn’t deliver her baby due to some complications.
Left with no option, the ASHA again shifted the patient on the fishing boat to the other side of a canal and rushed her to Chitrakonda hospital in an ambulance. The village remains cut-off from the rest of the region due to a wide nullah near its border. This is one reason the villagers often get deprived of ambulance service.
The ASHA with her selfless service has saved the life of a pregnant woman as well as the latter’s baby.
While both the mother and the baby have returned to the village, locals appreciated the sincerity of the health activist.
