ATM dispenses Rs 500 instead of Rs 100, customers loot lakhs in 2hrs

Bhopal: Customers who walked into an Axis Bank ATM in Deeg branch here in Madhya Pradesh had a field day after it started dispensing Rs 500 notes instead of Rs 100.

Soon, a rumour started that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was giving out free cash. After the news spread, people in large numbers queued up outside the ATM withdrew all the money.

After getting information, bank authorities rushed to the spot and closed the ATM. Bank officials said that there was a mistake while loading money into the ATM machine. Later, officials found out the identities of the customers who had withdrawn the amount and directed them to return the money.

In January, a similar incident had taken place in Tonk. An ATM there had dispensed Rs 2,000 notes in place of Rs 100 notes. A resident had received Rs 70,000 in place of Rs 3,500 he had keyed in.
